As the weather is changing and the holidays are right around the corner, some of us just aren’t ready to say goodbye to the moody, comforting feeling of Fall. This time of year can be extremely hectic and stressful; sometimes it’s nice to cozy up and escape to another world for a little while. Below is a list of TV shows and movies that will give you that nostalgic longing for the Fall season.

“Gilmore Girls”

Starting strong, it always seems to be Autumn in the town of Stars Hollow. The main characters, Lorelai, and her daughter Rory, are almost always seen wearing cozy sweaters and sipping on some sort of coffee. The drama, plot twists, and romance will have you hooked, making “Gilmore Girls” a perfect show to watch, or revisit, this Fall season. You can stream it on Netflix!

“Supernatural”

For the ones who live every day like it’s Halloween, “Supernatural” is the perfect show for you. Two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, hunt monsters and fight evil while learning the importance of family. This show incorporates horror with comedy, romance, and even real-life issues that hit even harder considering the mass of occult and otherworldly topics. You can stream it on Netflix & Hulu!

“Gossip Girl”

A classic drama series based in the Upper East Side, “Gossip Girl” is filled with heavy Fall nostalgia. Following the life of Serena Van der Woodsen and her popular clique, the high school drama mixed with the busy New York City lifestyle is bound to have you locked in this season. And let’s not forget the yearly Thanksgiving episodes, which remind viewers of the not-so-good moments that can come out of the holidays. You can stream it on MAX!

“The Vampire Diaries”

The town of Mystic Falls, Virginia is the epitome of Fall, and not only because of the hot vampire population. Elena Gilbert's life turns upside down when the Salvatore brothers return to town. This show is immediately thought of once the weather hits below 70 degrees, and the vibes of it are unmatched. The “Elena Gilbert'' core aesthetic has taken over fall fashion Pinterest boards and the eerie visuals and romance of the show will have anyone hooked. You can stream it on MAX and Peacock!

“New Girl”

For all of the sitcom lovers out there, what are you doing if you haven’t watched “New Girl” multiple times already? The main character, Jessica Day, moves into an apartment with three single guys after a rough breakup, and the rest is history. This show is hilarious, and the yearly Thanksgiving episodes are perfect. The characters are extremely relatable and the relationship developments throughout the show bring such a comforting and heartwarming feeling to viewers. This comedy is a must-watch, and you can stream it on MAX and Peacock!

“Twilight”

To start the list of movies, the Twilight Saga should be on your binge-watch list this season. Some may think these movies are cringe, but they are more on the camp side. The visuals, gloomy weather, and the supernatural high school romance are too good to pass up this season. Also, let’s not forget how the soundtracks of these movies are unmatched. All “Twilight” movies are available to binge on Amazon Prime Video, Youtube, & Tubi!

“Stuck in Love”

One of my personal favorites to rewatch for Fall, “Stuck in Love” is an underrated drama/romance that focuses on a writer, his ex-wife, and their two teenagers as they go through new experiences, learn about themselves, and develop relationships along the way. The timeline follows the characters through a year of their lives, starting and ending with Thanksgiving dinner. This watch is more emotional, and if you’re stuck picking where to start on this list, then this film is a great choice! You can stream it for free on YouTube, Peacock, Tubi, and more!

“Interview With the Vampire”

Based on the classic gothic novel of the same name by Anne Rice, this film is one to visit before the month ends. The vampire Lestat de Lioncourt hunts down Louis de Pointe du Lac to be his companion in immortality. It begins in 1791 in New Orleans and follows Louis' transformation and relationship with Lestat. Who doesn’t love a gay vampire love story? Especially one with a lot of drama. The recent AMC+ television adaptation of the novel is also phenomenal, both are a must-watch! You can stream the film on Hulu and the series on AMC+.

“The Devil Wears Prada”

This film follows Andy, a college graduate, who has big dreams and ambitions to make it in the city. Lucky for her she lands a job as an assistant to the editor of one of the best fashion magazines in the city, despite not knowing much about fashion itself. But, her luck doesn’t last long when she meets her diabolical boss Miranda Priestly. If you have not watched this movie, you better get to it! Andy and Miranda’s development as characters and friends is to die for, and the busy but glamorous New York City setting is a plus. You can stream it on Hulu!

“The Craft”

For my witch lovers, this film is a 90’s classic. It screams “whimsigoth” Fall with the scenery and visuals. Sarah finds that her unique gifts have a purpose when three girls at school in her new town approach her to be the fourth witch to complete their coven. Magic can get out of control if misused, and the consequences are shown throughout this film. It’s more spooky and has that specific Autumn feeling to it. The characters, aesthetics, and fashion design choices are amazing as well. You can check out this film on Hulu!

This twelve-song playlist was created to give all the fall vibes from eerie, witchy, romance,

heartbreak, and upbeat dance songs. The playlist is only 46 minutes long but provokes a wide

variety of emotions. Hope everyone enjoys it!

#1 Witchcraft by Graveyard Club

The song Witchcraft is an upbeat love song with a very nostalgic sound. The chorus of the song is “Darling your love’s like witchcraft”, the song describing the pain before seeing the lover's face and the aftermath of intense love. If you are looking for that burst of nostalgia that is reminiscent of 80s music this is the song for you!

#2 Witches by Alice Phoebe Lou

The song Witches is another very upbeat song that is great for dancing. It also gives a slight

nostalgic vibe that will leave you listening to it on repeat. The chorus of the song is “I’m one of

those witches babe”, it is also a romance song but it has lyrics like “just don’t try to save me

cause I don’t wanna be saved”. It is a great song and Alice Phoebe Lou is an independent artist which is also a plus!

#3 Lovesong by The Cure

Lovesong is in my opinion THE fall song honestly The Cure in general. A classic gothic love

song still upbeat and worthy of your best gothic dance moves. I have no other words to describe this song but perfection and a must for the fall season!

#4 The Perfect Girl by Mareux

The song The Perfect Girl is yet another upbeat love song but with an eerie edge. With lyrics like “You’re such a strange girl I want to be with you”. This song has a unique sound and let's be real if you like pretending to be in an edit. I don't do this is THE song.

#5 Linger by The Cranberries

Okay, put on your seatbelt because we are officially getting into our feels. The song Linger is

nothing short of heartbreak. As much as fall is a relationship season it is also a breakup season so this one's for you guys. This song perfectly invokes the emotions of a fresh breakup, “You know I’m such a fool for you. You got me wrapped around your finger? Do you have to let it linger?” The lyrics are so filled with emotions that either you are perfectly happy or actively experiencing these emotions it will hit.

#6 Paper Bag by Fiona Apple

Yet another in your feelings song but add some anger into that heartbreak. Paper Bag is such a raw depiction of love with lyrics like “hunger hurts but starving works when it costs too much to love” and “I know I’m a mess he doesn’t wanna clean up”. Like most of Fiona Apple’s music this is a must listen if you want pure raw emotion.

#7 Season Of The Witch by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey’s version of Season Of The Witch gives all of the witchy, spooky, fall vibes that

are a must, especially around October. Lana Del Rey recorded this song as part of a scary movie soundtrack so it is most definitely fitting for the season and queen Lana can never do wrong.

#8 Wicked Game by Chris Isaak

Yet another song that is perfect in my eyes, Wicked Games gives all the mysterious cool girl

vibes imaginable. It is a love/loss song with a semi-eerie vibe. The beat of the song is

gorgeous with lyrics like “I’d never dreamed that I’d meet somebody like you. No, I’d never

dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you.” This song will always be on my playlist no matter the season, listen!

#9 Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Dream Academy

All I have to say about this song is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off museum scene.

#10 Lost in Translation by Lili Joy

Lost in Translation is a gorgeous song with an eerie siren-sounding beginning. It is a love/loss

song that explains the title perfectly. The song even has lines in French that add to the

sound. I love every song on this playlist but this song quickly became a favorite!

#11 Sea, Swallow Me by Cocteau Twins, Harold Budd

Sea, Swallow Me has such a powerful beat that falls under the category of dream pop/ shoegaze. This song sounds magical and even haunting perfect for the spookiness of the season. You can never go wrong with the Cocteau Twins.

#12 Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

Last but certainly not least Fade Into You, is a BEAUTIFUL song. I had to end the

playlist off with this masterpiece, another love/loss song that wraps up this playlist in the best way. Fade Into You will have you swaying to the beat and staring out into space and to me it just sounds like fall.

Adding the word “girl” to almost anything appears to be the hot new thing. Between the downtown girl, the tomato girl, girl math, and the ever-present girl boss, women worldwide can now sort themselves into any hyperspecific personality trait. The most prominent of these phrases is that of girl dinner. Girl dinner, according to Urban Dictionary, is “a dinner that consists of many different kinds of small appetizers/snacks rather than just one entree”. Think charcuterie or cheese boards. I’ve seen one made up of microwaveable popcorn and watermelon and another that only contained pickles. The trend sounds innocent enough, and to be fair I do believe most people who partake in the trend are doing so purely for fun. I’m more concerned with how the trend is emblematic of a culture obsessed with turning women into a suffocating box labeled with market-friendly quirks.

Way back in 2012, Gillian Flynn’s landmark novel Gone Girl blessed us with The Cool Girl Monologue. The monologue comes from its (debatable) antiheroine, Amy Dunne. Amy relents the Cool Girl, a male fantasy that women are forced to perform.

Being the Cool Girl means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves, threesomes and anal sex and hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she’s hosting the world’s biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2, because Cool Girls are above all hot. Hot and understanding. Cool girls never get angry, they only smile in a chagrined loving manner and let men do whatever they want.” (Flynn)

The Cool Girl is a clear representation of the ideal woman of the 2010s. The Cool Girl embodied the era’s hipster and “real” attitude. She was the beckon of the early tens fake authenticity. And despite her discovery over ten years ago, she remains. Except she’s taken on a plethora of new forms. Girl dinner is a wonderful representation of one of the new Cool Girls. Girl dinner is for girls who are a little quirky, but not offputting. Girl dinner is for girls who are either too successful or too down to earth to make a classic meal. Girl dinner is small and dainty, unlike the way men indulge themselves. Girl dinner is for girls who are in on the joke. Girl dinner at its heart is a joke, but it’s also a little sincere. Making fun of your inability to properly sustain yourself is a signifier of, well, coolness. It’s just like how Bella Hadid’s thin, chainsmoking, esoteric sensibilities have become the ideal woman. She’s inexplicably modern, but her classic femininity speaks to our love of rigid gender norms. And above all else she’s marketable.

All these “girl” adjectives and nouns are perfect for Instagram and TikTok algorithms. They break down our complex identities and reduce them to brand-friendly buzzwords. Good Morning America did a segment on girl dinner and I can’t tell if that’s a good or bad thing. Trend cycles are always consumerist, and what does it say about our culture if the word girl is trendy? Both “girl” and “dinner” on their own have been marketable properties, although subtly, but the smashing of the words together in such an overt way makes it clear that a woman’s personhood is less important than what we can make off of them. The word girl from being elusive but personal, to a hashtag. I personally can’t stand that women have to be easy to swallow if they want to be interesting. Unfortunately, people care more about seeming hip than challenging gender-based capitalism.

I want to clarify one thing: I know the girl who made the original girl dinner sound was doing so just for fun. I don’t blame her at all for the way this thing has spun out of control. I do however blame the internet for capitalizing on one’s identity. I think it’s time we put the word girl down. She’s had a good run, but what else is there left to girlify? More importantly, what else can we apply the word girl to before it starts being classically misogynistic (look up girl math if you want an answer to that question)? We’ve somehow managed to go from wanting to dismantle gender, to right back around to reveling in it. There’s more to a person than what they’re worth algorithmically. I hope that we can all begin to explore who we are just as people, not as the type of “girl” we are.
