Dear reader, it appears that spooky season is officially here. There’s no better way to partake in the festivities than willingly putting on a film that has been banned from showing in theatres (more on that later). But, what is one to do if they have such limited time? Well do not fret, because I have just the solution. Here are eight horror short films and where to find them brought to you by a lifelong horror fiend.

Juliet in Paris (1967)

Juliet in Paris is a french film starring it girl Juieit Berto is a feminist horror film for the ages. It tells the story of college student Juliet and her hidden obsession with violence. Director Claude Miller creates an endlessly fascinating female lead that will leave you both sympathetic and slightly disturbed. The bright color palette combined with innovative framing are a treat for the eyes. And it features, in my humble opinion, one of the best ending shots of all time. It’s so good that I’m mad I didn’t come up with it first. This is also the first of many “good for her” films on this list, so get excited. This one is available for free on youtube.

Elephant (1989)

Ever wanted to know what the Irish Troubles were like? Well boy do I have the movie for you. Elephant is a plotless, anti movie that consists entirely of random acts of violence. The film is a metaphor for the “elephant in the room”, that elephant being Northern Ireland’s long and deeply upsetting history. As a proud descendant of Northern Irelanders, I recommend this film for anyone that understands what generational trauma looks and feels like. Trust me, it’s just as disturbing as this film is. Elephant is available for free on youtube.

The Alphabet (1968)

This is a student film made by the one and only, David Keith Lynch. Like most Lynch films, the plot is pretty much impossible to recant. This film is said to come from his daughter’s (who also appears in the film) night terrors. The Alphabet is weird, even for Lynch standards. Incoherent animations, terrifying renditions of the ABCs, and what can only be described as distorted baby noises are just some of what makes up the three minute short. It’s Lynch doing what Lynch does best, confusing and amazing the audience. If you want something to chew on for a while, this one’s definitely for you. The Alphabet is available for free on youtube.

Un Chien Andalou (1929)

If you want something equally as weird as the last entry, I recommend this iconic piece of surrealist filmmaking. This film has everything: unforgettable match cuts, a brain melting plot, religion (?), and of course, eyeball slicing. Some may find this one frustrating, but if you're willing to give it the time, you’ll be reminded of this film’s long lasting memory. The fact that it’s co-written by Salvador Dalí is reason enough to give it a shot. You won’t be forgetting this one any time soon, that’s for sure. Un Chien Andalou is available on Amazon Prime.

Shia LaBeouf Live (2014)

This one might be cheating a bit, but it’s on letterboxd so I’m counting it as a short film. Ah, how can one describe Shia LeBeouf? This is definitely the lightest short on the list, as it’s more of a horror comedy. In this film, a narrator tells the story of a perilous fight against known abuser Shia Lebeouf. The song gets more and more outrageous with each chorus, culminating in an exclamation in the last bridge that is so funny I still giggle every time it pops into my head. There are multiple verses here that left me wondering how one even comes up with something like that. The song is also catchy as hell. This is for the girls who want a little giggle and a little spookiness. Shia LaBeouf Live is available for free on youtube.

Possibly in Michigan (1983)

Possibly in Michigan is one of my all time favorite short films. You may have heard of this one after a sound bite from it went viral on public enemy number one, TikTok. Cecelia Condit’s one of a kind tale of two women seeking revenge against a male threat is both a validating experience for women everywhere and a haunting reminder of the very real threat women face everyday. No matter how fantastical the execution is, the heart of the short is all too real. Condit would know, having dated an actual serial killer (there’s a wikipedia rabbit hole for ya). I can’t think of a film that better utilizes artistic expression. A psychedelic blend of music, horror, comedy, and the singular female existence, Possibly in Michigan remains one of the most affecting cinematic experiences ever made. Possibly in Michigan is available for free on youtube.

I Was A Teenage Serial Killer (1994)

How can I even begin to describe I Was A Teenage Serial Killer? A triumph in riot grrrl feminism, Sarah Jacobson allows the unsung teenage girl a chance she rarely gets in cinema: the opportunity to inflict the type of violence usually reserved for men. The title pretty much explains the plot, but there’s something so breathtaking about such a small film. Seeing a teenage girl express her rage so brazenly made me really emotional. Film allows us to confront our darkest feelings in a healthy way, and I Was A Teenage Serial Killer is a prime example of this. This is a movie that hears the pleas and frustrations of women everywhere and gives the most extreme outlet for it. It’s wonderful. It also curb stomps the “not all men” ideology, which is reason alone to give it a watch. I adore just about every second of this one and Sarah Jacobson is my personal hero. I Was A Teenage Serial Killer is available for free on Tubi.

Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987)

Remember at the start of this piece when I mentioned that one of these is banned from theatres? Well folks, this is the one. Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story comes from Todd “let’s do it baby I know the law” Haynes. The film depicts the life of Singer Karen Carpenter told entirely through Barbie dolls. If you're wondering why the film has been almost entirely wiped off the face of the earth, Haynes used copyrighted music from the Carpenters, and when Karen’s brother Richard caught wind of this, he sued Haynes. One can also assume Richard pursued legal action because the film is just plain creepy. Did I mention that Haynes skinned the barbies to make them look emaciated? Because he did that, just so you know. While the film may be infamous, it still remains a harrowing, yet moving depiction of how mental illness can destroy a person’s life. Karen Carpenter struggled with severe anorexia, and it ultimately killed her. Haynes pulls no punches. Many have said this, but Superstar is one of the most successful biopics because it is not concerned with turning the subject’s life into a neat little package. Haynes set out to tell the real story, and he succeeded. As I’ve mentioned, Superstar is almost impossible to find, but it may or may not be available somewhere on the internet right now. If you happen to find it, maye don’t spread it around so as to not alert Mr. Carpenter.

So there you have it folks. I love all of these shorts, and I promise you’ll at least find them interesting. So grab your warm drink of choice, turn down the lights, and relax by watching Todd Haynes play with skinned Barbie dolls. Who knows? You might end up on a weird short film rabbit hole like I did, and then you too can write an article about your favorites. Anyway, I hope you find these as wonderfully odd as I did. A happy spooky season to all and to all a good night!

If you’re struggling with what to wear for Halloween this year, fear no more! I’ve compiled a list of a variety of ideas that you can take inspiration from (I hope). From silly to deadly serious, these costumes are sure to give you a jolt… of fun!

Movies from 2023

Barbie (2023)

I think everyone can agree that this is most likely going to be the source for most of the mainstream Halloween costumes this year. Whether you want to be a cowgirl Barbie, rollerblading Barbie, cowboy Ken, rollerblading Ken, or don one of the many other fashionable fits from the film, you truly cannot go wrong with these fantastic choices.

Bottoms (2023)

Have a group of friends? Want to do an easy group costume? You can easily find outfits that are similar, if not the same, to what the characters in Bottoms wore at a store like Target. Bonus points if you get matching necklaces like PJ and Josie as well as wearing the nose tape for when PJ gets socked. Extra bonus points if you’re all gay.

Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse (2023)

There are so many options for everyone in this single movie alone. From Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey to Miguel O’Hara and Pavitr Prabhakar, every spider-suit looks insanely cool and unique. Any of these characters could work for a solo costume OR, if you put them together, a group costume full of different spider-people!

The Little Mermaid (2023)

First things first, Ariel and Eric would make for such an ADORABLE couple costume. The outfits in this film were absolutely incredible- from Ariel’s blue dress to Eric’s sailor outfit, either would look stunning for a cute Halloween outing. If you’re a creative person who likes to put their own costumes together, this one might actually be up your alley much more considering it isn’t one that is likely to be sold at a Spirit Halloween.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Looking for something a little bit more silly? Well, I’d say go for one of the infamous characters from the Super Mario Bros. world! Whether it be Peach, Luigi, Toad, or Mario himself, these can be fun costumes to do as a group or going solo. Although they may be a classic Halloween costume, they’ve definitely been given a push-up this year due to this new film.

Classics

Kill Bill (2003)

Uma Thurman’s “The Bride” has a pretty killer jumpsuit in this movie. Simply, how could you not want to recreate it for a Halloween look?

Scream (1996)

Wanna play a game? Whether you want to be a final girl or Ghostface themself, this series is a go-to for Halloween costumes. Bloody yourself up and act as a survivor or fully conceal your identity with the iconic ghostly mask.

Clueless (1995)

As if I’d miss this one! Cher Horowitz’s outfits are unforgettable, especially the classic yellow checkered one. It’s definitely an easy find, online or in stores. You might even have an outfit like hers in your closet!

Star Wars (1977-2019)

There are SO many characters to choose from in this saga. Whether you like how certain things occurred or not (we’re not going to get into that right now), we can all agree that the Star Wars universe has provided the public with a plethora of outfits to choose from for Halloween. So, if you’re feeling more like a scoundrel, Han Solo might be the move. A little rebellious with a side of snippy remarks? Ahsoka Tano could definitely be the perfect choice, even if you just do something that resembles her. Some other powerful women could be Princess Leia, Rey, and Padme! Or, if you’re leaning more towards the “I’m angry and sand sucks” side, Anakin Skywalker is a no-brainer.

Back to the Future (1985)

In all honesty, I’ve included this one for my own selfish reason (that reason being that I love these movies). But hey, if you’ve ever wanted to look like a mad scientist trying to conduct a so-called“weather experiment” or a kid who looks as if he works for the Coast Guard since he has his “life preserver” on at all times, Doc or Marty McFly might be the move!

Friday the 13th (1980)

Okay, let’s just cut to the chase- that mask, although simple, can be TERRYFING. Jason is a legendary horror film icon and it’d be a huge mistake to leave him out of this list. This is another one of those outfits that can definitely be found online or in stores. Plus, if you’re looking for a simple way to try to frighten your friends… Yeah, this one could definitely work (at least, it would on me).

TV Shows

Wednesday (2022-ongoing)

Wednesday came out just a little shy of Halloween last year, so it only feels right to put it on this year’s list! Of course, the Addam family are already a well-known bunch but, with this new show, their popularity has risen once again! Quite honestly, you could choose any member of the family to dress up as and look positively dreadful.

Ted Lasso (2020-2023)

This heartwarming show came to an end this year but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have it live on in our world! Dressing up as Ted, Keely, Jaime, or Roy could certainly be a fun way to spend Halloween. Richmond till we die!

Our Flag Means Death (2022-ongoing)

Ed and Stede are back in season two this year, coinciding perfectly with Halloween time! These two definitely give off black cat and golden retriever energy so, if you enjoy this show, are one of the two or are part of a pair that ARE the epitome of those two, I say go for it! Hopefully, your ship won’t be wrecked.

Good Omens (2019-ongoing)

Another black cat and golden retriever duo, Crowley and Aziraphale graced our TV screens again this year when they returned for season two. This could most certainly be another amazing duo costume- or you could go at it solo! Considering that’s how this previous season kind of ended (no spoilers), it wouldn’t be far off.

The Last of Us (2023-ongoing)

Based on the incredible video game, The Last of Us topped the CHARTS when it came out earlier this year. Ellie and Joel are both such intriguing characters and their outfits can be quite easily accessible! You can most likely find similar clothing to theirs at, again, a Target nearby and rough it up to make it look as if you’ve made it through the apocalypse. Then, grab an old-school backpack that you may have lying around and you’re all set! Or, if you’re feeling like going down a different path, maybe turn yourself into one of the Infected (maybe even a Clicker). Spooky, but neat.

Music Icons

Taylor Swift

Taylor’s Eras Tour was chock-full of outfits for all of you Swifties out there. Whether you want to wear something similar to her sparkly “Lover” bodysuit, style your own “22” ensemble (including the hat), or one of the many other options, you truly can’t go wrong.

Olivia Rodrigo

Both of Olivia’s albums, SOUR and GUTS, have such strong themes visual-wise. If you want to take it back to her debut album, maybe her classic cheerleader look in “Good 4 U” is the way to go. But, if you want to drop in on the new GUTS craziness, maybe check out her outfit in the “vampire” music video!

Beyonce

If you want to be a sparkly cowgirl (or just sparkly in general) Beyonce’s outfits in her Renaissance Tour are precisely what you’re looking for. Plus, it’s Beyonce. Need I say more?

Rihanna

Rihanna at the Superbowl. That’s all.

Harry Styles

Just because Harry’s Love On Tour extravaganza has been done for a few months now, that doesn’t mean you can’t replicate the many looks that he modeled while on the road! But, if you are going to throw a boa into your ensemble, please be mindful of where all of the feathers end up (please).

Joe Jonas

This one’s just for the giggles.

How did you come up with your group's name?

Louis, our lead singer, Matt, our guitarist, and Noah, our keyboard player debated for several hours and were inspired to name ourselves after a fruit after the band Peach Pit, and our guitarist suggested we do a fruit-animal combo. Our leader singer is obsessed with fig trees, so Fig Lizard was one of the first suggestions and that was what stuck. Other contenders for our name were Galileo’s Thumb, Clay Formations, Tetra, and the Algorhythm.

How did the band come together?

Louis and Frank, who plays bass, met at a conference in Boone, NC in June 2022 while they were both students at Clemson University. They started playing together with Louis’ neighbor Matt, who played guitar. The three put an ad on Craigslist and met Noah and Ethan, our drummer. Matt, who was playing lead guitar, left the band in February 2023 to move to Denver and the band has been a four-piece ever since!

What have been some of your favorite/ memorable performances?

Our favorite show we played has been at Pi Lam Spring Jam in Cullowhee, NC. It was a Greek life-related event and we played on a makeshift stage made of wooden pallets and under a giant tarp made into a tent. It was at one end of a huge field full of Western Carolina students and there was a giant trash bonfire in the middle of the field. We felt like we were in Animal House and had an awesome time drinking beer and smoking cigarettes with other bands and the people attending. Other notable shows have been our first ‘real’ gig at Inchoate Art Gallery and the house show we recently played in Florence, SC.

What are your favorite songs to perform?

One of our favorite songs to play is Mr. Limmertz, which was the first song that we released on Spotify. It tells the story of a man who lives the American dream but hates his life. We also love playing Devil Woman, which is a Santana-style jam, and Girl from 6b, which tells the story of a romance between two neighbors living in an apartment complex. They will both be on our album which will be coming out soon!
