How long have you been making music? What led you to want to be a performer?

“I've been involved with music my entire life but didn't start writing songs until late 2019 - early 2020. I put out my first song "Pieces" in January 2020 and wasn't planning on really releasing any more after that. I just kinda started doing it. I am grateful that I didn't feel the pressure to make a career out of this when I started, and I'm grateful the roots of it all were just from enjoyment of music!”

What have been some of your favorite/ memorable performances?

“There have been many amazing shows in the past 2 years but I think one of the most memorable was a show that we played in Boston. The traffic was SO incredibly bad on the way to the show that we ended up with only about 20 minutes to set up everything and soundcheck before we had to play the show. We were flustered and anxious as we walked up to play the show but we were met with one of the most high-energy and passionate crowds that we had ever seen outside of our hometown. It was a blessing for sure.”

What are your favorite songs to perform?

“I really enjoy the way that we have developed a lot of the songs to be different from the studio versions when we play them live. I think one of my favorites to play is Trader Joe's. The way that song feels with a full band is just something that you can't get when you listen to it on Spotify.”

Who are some of your influences?

“Oh man there are a lot!! I think in the past few years some of the most important bands for me have been, Slow Pulp, Bon Iver, The Beths, Hippo Campus, Carwash, Phoenix, The 1975 and a million more that I could rattle off forever!”

If you took a James Bond girl but gave her a mic and a whiskey sour you will probably get Alexa Dark serenading you. Alexa Dark has grown up all over the world and has developed a unique sound. I asked her some questions about what influenced her dark feminine energy and what she plans to do next.

You are multicultural, how has each country you've lived in influenced your music, style, and taste?

Experiencing different cultures and cities firsthand at a young age really shaped me and my love for music. From the indie rock music scene in London that got me on my first stages, to the French films and style I grew to love while spending time in Paris, I was exposed to styles of music, fashion, and films I might have otherwise never heard of, and that has become a huge part of who I am as an artist.

What led you to move to NYC?

I was born in New York, and have always felt a real connection to the city. I moved back for college and started getting involved in the music and art scenes.

'Cool for you?' is quite vulnerable. Is it about someone specific?

There was someone in my life that led me to write ‘Cool for You.’ But as the song evolved, it really became more about myself than anyone else, and I think a lot of my vulnerability in the song comes from that.

What has been the response like to Dark, Vol I?

It’s been so great. It was such an amazing experience to bring the music, the visuals, and the whole world that was in my head to life, so I’m thrilled when people tell me it’s resonated with them.

Will there be a VOL II? And if so, will it be darker?

Haha, well I’ve been working on a lot of new music that I’m really excited about. Definitely the beginning of a new chapter that’s pretty dark, so…maybe…

What inspired your dark and moody aesthetic?

Since I was a kid, I was always very intrigued by films, books, and music with a more melancholic tone and darker edge and aesthetic...I guess I’m still that moody kid at heart, more interested in the darker, shadowy sides of people and life.

How do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music?

I always wish to create a world with my music that immerses the listener in a sort of parallel universe for the length of the song or album. I’d like the audience to feel however they want to feel in this space we meet in - explore whatever emotion arises, be whatever version of themselves they want to be.

What are some of your musical influences?

So many. But to name a few: Nancy Sinatra, Portishead, Serge Gainsbourg, Amy Winehouse.

Cab Ellis is an NYC-based group consisting of eight members making their way through the NYC rock scene. Their sound experiments a lot, making it difficult to categorize them. They incorporate hip-hop, jazz, rap, bar rock, and indie, making their sound different than anyone you’ve heard. Some of their influences are The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Mac Miller, and more. When crafting their music, they prioritize making music that emotes an emotion rather than trying to fit a genre. They have gained a dedicated audience who is bound to follow them through their musical journeys and mosh pits. Known for their memorable live performances, you never know what will happen at a Cab Ellis show. We sat with Cab Ellis as they discussed with us their live performances, influences, tour stories, and so much more.
